The Czech Fiction in the Spanish Books Market

The thesis aimes is to describe the panorama of contemporary translation from Czech fiction in Spain based on interviews with prominent translators of the last twenty years. The thesis tries to answer the questions of what the criteria for the selection of translated titles are (are classics or contemporary authors translated more? And why is this the case?), what does the current Spanish book market look like, how does the translation support of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic work what are the possibilities of scholarships, how does the cooperation between translators and institutions offering support work. This is an empirical work, the essential part of which consists of interviews conducted with selected translators and representatives of institutions that support translation from Czech literature. The thesis provides a brief introduction to the history of translation from Spanish into Czech and vice versa, charts the change in conditions after 1989 and focuses in particular on new translation currents after 2000. It also discusses publishing practices in Spain, literary prizes and the functioning of literary fairs and agencies.
